Margaretha Roosenboom was born in Voorburg, Netherlands in 1843. She was born into a family of well-established artists and was initially trained by her father before going to The Hague to learn watercolor painting from her grandfather. Margaretha was a child prodigy and exhibited her work at the Pulchri Studio at the age of sixteen and became a member in 1878. Her paintings won prizes at The WorldÂ’s Fair Vienna, Chicago World Exposition and Worlds Fair Atlanta. She was a very accomplished artist who was known for her flower and fruit still life paintings. Her paintings are held in several important private and public collections throughout the world.
The present work was painted after her marriage to the Dutch artist Johannes Gijsbert Vogel (1829-1915) in 1892 and is an exquisite example of the artistÂ’s still life painting, a subject that Rooseboom was known for and produced throughout her career. The painting has a clear globular vase with a bouquet of roses set on a tabletop against an undefined mottled-grey background. The painting features soft brushwork with a light palette, so skillfully deployed that it perfectly describes the blooming flowersÂ’ delicacy. The ethereal painting has several leaves and bulbs surrounded by fully blossomed pinkish white roses. Roosenboom enhanced the painting with several areas of gouache accents to give the painting texture and depth. This soft and delicate painting is a particularly charming example of RoosenboomÂ’s mature period of paintings, which masterfully conveys the beauty of flowers and nature.
