This is the enlarged edition with the Assassination Attempt added. Field achieved distinction as a justice for the U.S. Supreme Court (1863-1897). He moved to California in 1849 and became the Alcalde of Marysville before being elected to the California State Supreme Court in 1857. Wheat notes: "The recollections of a brilliant early lawyer, one of the founders of Marysville." Includes a large amount of detailed information on early trials, lynch juries, and famous cases in California history. This copy has the corrected slips pasted-in on pages 286 and 297.
