Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 20th century CE. A beautiful pendant pair of bark paintings, most likely created to decorate the exterior of a home. The two paintings are nearly identical, each one depicting an abstract skeletal visage in red and white on a rich chocolate brown ground. The skulls are dramatically presented pressed up to the front of the picture plane, peering out with startled expressions. Wooden dowels were used to join the pair on the back side.
