Description

Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, wheel-thrown form with pedestal base, flattened reverse side, applied scrolled hanger, and coggled rim, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied bird and floral motifs. Surface decorated with streaks of copper and manganese over cream-colored slip and covered in a clear lead glaze. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, consigned from Illinois. Hanger broken at the rim and reglued. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition, retaining a brilliant luster to the glaze and including the bird's original beak, a rarity for this form.
