Description

Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Rochester, NY Advertising, attributed to John Burger, Rochester, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, the shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "J. COCHRANE / WHOLESALE AND RETAIL DEALER IN / GROCERIES PROVISIONS / PURE WINES & LIQUORS & C & C & C. / NO 79 MAIN ST. ROCHESTER N.Y.". Decorated below the advertising with a finely slip-trailed flowering plant bearing two blossom and shaded leaves. Slip-trailed "2" to shoulder. A fine example of Burger-produced merchant stoneware, featuring five lines of advertising. A 5" hairline from rim on far left side of crock's front. A 3 3/4" hairline from rim on reverse. A 2 1/4" x 1" flake to underside at edge, a small portion of which is visible along the base of the crock. A 1 1/4" flake to underside at edge, adjacent to a minor base chip. Some staining to surface. A small in-the-firing lime ping to reverse.
