John James Audubon is one of America’s most well-known naturalist painter, whose impressive portfolios of types of birds developed into ‘Birds of America’ the finest book of ornithology ever developed. Many additional notes on birds and other animals were found in his journals that, after his death, were published by his granddaughter Maria.

These journals, which cover James’s travels in Europe, Labrador, and voyage on the Missouri River, are filled with stories and discoveries beyond his research on birds. He describes Native American Indian tribes, impressive landscapes, Indian artifacts such as tobacco pipes, fishing for sharks, along with his own sketches of himself on his journeys.

According to the ‘Annals of Scottish Natural History,’ this first edition book is considered

“excellent of kind, and, for the first time, a most carefully prepared biography of the great naturalist, his life, and works, as well as the full text of the famous ‘Journals.’
