Title: Bracebridge Hall; or, The Humorists. A Medley by Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.
Place Published: New York
Publisher:Printed by C. S. Van Winkle
Date Published: 1822
Description:
2 volumes. (8vo in fours), 23½x15 cm. (9¼x6"), original drab boards, printed paper labels, untrimmed. First American Edition.
A continuation of Irving's genial stories, articles and impressions gathered from his European travels, which began with The Sketch Book. Priority between the American and English issues is not known, but the American edition is the scarcer of the two and rarely found in decent condition, much less in original boards as here. BAL 10109; Langfeld & Kleinfield, pages 23-24; Wright I, 1380.
Duplicate withdrawn from the University of Virginia. Laid into volume one is a typed note: "This copy, although it appears to be in better condition that the Chamberlain copy, is actually a sophisticated copy. The back cover of vol. 1 is supplied and the other covers have been very skillfully repaired and re-attached." This appears to have been supplied by Swann Galleries. This copy was lot number 398 in the Barrett Duplicates sale of 1974.
