A famous response to Johnson's A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland (1775), in which MacNicol, a Scottish clergyman and collector of Scottish literature, defends James Macpherson's Ossian poems against Johnson's assertion that they were not genuine. It has been speculated that MacNicol's work, which some described as "unclerical," was augmented by Macpherson himself. Courtney, pages 120-21.
