Description

The largest Redware Bird Whistle I have seen. 9 1/2" to the top of the head, 6 ¾" across and 7 1/2" from beak to tail. The bird sits on a perch and it is flanked by 2 small birds (approx.. 2 ¼" front to back), with 2 tiny birds (1") on the perch below. There are some applied molded clumps, both front and back. The round base is 4 ¼" in diameter and the piece is very heavy (3 1/2" pounds – probably 5 1/2 pounds shipping weight). And yes, the whistle does work – drives the cats crazy! The whistle is in very fine condition. As noted, it works. It is a bit crudely molded and there are some imperfections in the glaze and the surface, none of which detract. The edge of the tail of the tiny bird on the lower right has missing glaze and I don’t know if that is just a glaze-skip or a shallow chip. There are no other chips or cracks, etc. An interesting piece of redware from the 1880 – 1900 period, probably from England.
