Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely-detailed carved wooden female mask with twin spiraling plaits of hair framing her face. Full lips, a flat nose, large eyes, and an enormous brow line, all in black and red paint, imbue her with a sense of character and movement. Several small perforations are positioned equidistant around the exterior framework as well as behind her cheeks in order to attach a textile garment beneath. A projecting red-and-black bust depicts a small male bust, perhaps an ancestor or deceased sibling. With carved eye holes and rich imagery, this is a beautiful example from the Ibibio! Size: 12" H (30.5 cm).
Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
