Description
George William (German: Georg Wilhelm; 13 November 1595 – 1 December 1640), of the Hohenzollern dynasty, was margrave and elector of Brandenburg and duke of Prussia from 1619 until his death. His reign was marked by ineffective governance during the Thirty Years' War. He was the father of Frederick William, the "Great Elector".
Origin: Germany, early 17th century.
Length – 67,4 cm. Weight – 1046 g.
Blade: Straight flat wide blade, tapering towards the tip. Blade is richly etched with various motifs: coat of arms of George William, Elector of Brandenburg – shield surrounded with floral motifs and a close helmet on the top, under the crown. Below the coat of arms initials G. W. C B. (Georg Wilhelm Churfürst von Brandenburg) in a frame, one the one side of the blade, and naked goddess holding a stic with tissue, floral motifs on both sides, standing on the globe under inscription “Die Welt is rundt Wer schwimenkun Dergehet zu Grundt†in a frame, on the other side of the blade. Length of the blade 63,4 cm, width 7,8 cm.
Hilt: Iron guard with openwork quillons bent down and the openwork side ring. Iron pommel in shape of flat cone and small head with a tang rived. Two openings in sides of the pommel. Wooden grip wrapped with original twisted iron wire, with Turk’s heads on ends.
Scabbard: absent.
Condition report: blade in very good condition. Some small black spots and insignificant pitting from corrosion. All etchings in good condition and readable. Guard and pommel with corresponding facture, fragments of patina and insignificant pitting. Grip’s wire in good condition.
