Description
As they are aged antiques, you may find stains, scratches, fray at the seams or moth holes.
One traditional Japanese event, "Day before the beginning of spring (Setsubun)" is the theme of this hanging scroll. Setsubun is when people celebrate to bring luck into their house and family, and scare away Orge by throwing beans.
The Orge (Oni) is drawn here as not liking the Holly.
Inscription (Signature and seal) by "Tosa Mitsuzane" *One of the Tosha School painters of the late Edo Period (around 1853-1867 A.D.)
[Holly and Orge (Oni) (Setsubun)]
Setsubun is a traditional event that usually happens the day before the first day of spring (around Feb 4th) by shouting "Oni Wa Uchi, Fuku Wa Soto" (Fortune Inside, Orge Outside) while throwing roasted soybeans. You are only allowed to eat as many as your age or plus one to wish for good luck.
