Description
Japanese artistic arrangement of a butterfly flying above flowers with metal and enamels. The butterfly is so well done, it nearly looks real.
Large round brass base metal dish, which is covered in azure blue, dark green, rose white, yellow, black, orange, and gray glass enamels. The tour de force on the charger is the nearly triangular off-set design on the front of a tall chrysanthemum plant rising through a peony bush. Hovering above the plants is a beautiful multi-colored butterfly. The workmanship is fine, intricate, time consuming and well executed. This is all hand made at the turn of the last century.
The design does not cover the entire piece and so there is some open space, Around the edge is a border of geometric designs. Even the back, has an intricate design of a central rounded phoenix and four stylized birds equidistant on the edge,
There are no artisan marks or labels.
MEASUREMENTS 12†(30.5 cm) diameter x 1 3/8†tall (3.5 cm). Weighs 2 lb 5.2 oz (1.1 kg)
CONDITION There are no breaks or dents. There are some crazing lines on the front open space at are deep inside the enamel. They may be firing flaws. There are pin holes in the glass enameling from the kiln. There are a few small nicks in the metal rim, as well as a few tiny glass chips where the metal is close on the rim design. There are some bare areas under the foot ring and dark dots in the enamel from manufacture. The piece for the age shows very well.
A colorful work of art to add a touch of Asian aesthetic to the home.
