Ancient OSTROGOTHIC SILVER EAGLE-HEADED BUCKLE c.7th century A.D.Eagle head with collar-set cabochon glass, as well as two rows of cabochon glass scrolling along the length. Rectangular plate has projecting eagle head with glass eye, central red glass medallion, four glass cabochons and one row scrolling on the perimeter. Back silver plate reinforced with flat bars. back plate is fragmental, otherwise intact. Size 5 inches long. Provenance: from the estate of Robert Thompson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bob represented the extensive dedication, scholarship, and attention to detail that the antiquity collecting community requires. Bob started collecting in the 1960s and dedicated a substantial portion of his time to the acquisition, attribution, and conservation of his collection.
