Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A haunting grey-white limestone head, heavily weathered, with deeply drilled eyes, a downturned mouth, and large curved ears. The remains of a large, crested headdress are also present. Time has made the face grotesque and frightening, but it is clear that the figure is not quite human - perhaps simian. Could it be one of the howler monkey gods, the Mayan patron of the arts, scribes, and music? Size: 9.5" L x 5.4" W x 9.5" H (24.1 cm x 13.7 cm x 24.1 cm); 13.45" H (34.2 cm) on included custom stand.
