Description
1670 Origins of English Language Sheringham De Anglorum Gentis Hebrew Phoenicia
‘De Anglorum Gentis Origine Disceptatio’ was Robert Sheringham’s most important and well known work. First published in 1670, this book was a work on the origins of the English language and people. Sheringham placed an emphasis on the influences of the English language particularly the Phoenicians which caused the English to have an identity as mainly Germanic. It is also known to have a direct influence on Aylett Sammes’ ‘Britannia Antiqua.’
This first edition features Talmudic tracts translated into English as well as references to Hebrew rabbinic sources. According to Cox, this book
“was highly praised in tis day as a scholarly investigation of the origin of the races which peopled the British Isles.”
