Item Details
Description
Julia and Paul Child Collection: Julia Child (1912-2004) Journalist, Television Personality, Chef and Paul Child (1902-1994) Diplomat, Artist. Julia moved to France with her husband, Paul in 1948. While there she developed a penchant for French cuisine. With a goal of adapting sophisticated French cuisine for mainstream Americans, she collaborated on a two-volume cookbook called Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which was considered groundbreaking, and has since become a standard guide for the culinary community. She also became a television icon with her popular cooking shows such as The French Chef. Paul was assigned to the United States Information Agency, which had sent them to Paris. He was also stationed in Marseilles and Bonn. Julia and Paul Child had a thing for Valentine’s Day. In the 1950s in Paris, they would spend nearly as much time crafting original Valentines, as she would perfecting a soufflé recipe. “Valentines cards had become a tradition of ours,” Julia writes in her posthumously published memoir, My Life in France, “born of the fact that we could never get ourselves organized in time to send out Christmas cards.” Correspondence addressed to their friends Paul and Hadley Mowrer. Hadley Richardson Mowrer (1891-1979) had been the first wife of Ernest Hemingway, she married Paul Scott Mowrer (1887-1971) in 1933. He was a newspaper correspondent and was awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for Correspondence, in 1929, while at the Chicago Daily News. Photographs: 4 ¾” x 7” black and white photograph (unsigned) of Julia and Paul while visiting their friends, Paul and Hadley Mowrer, in Chocorua, New Hampshire. 8” x 10” black and white portrait photograph (image 8” x 7 ½”) of Julia Child, not signed. Some scratching and minor corner damage.
