Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1300 to 1521 CE. An anthropomorphic idol figurine, hand-carved from a mottled cream-hued stone with dark inclusions, depicting a standing or kneeling figure with bent legs and arms held tightly against its broad chest. The dramatic visage is comprised of wide ovoid eyes, a bulging nose, incised ears, and a petite mouth, all beneath a planar brow line. A biconically-drilled suspension hole is oriented horizontally on the verso. Whether this piece represents a deity, leader, or metaphorical representative of humankind is unknown. What we do know, however, is that its subject matter - the universal theme of anthropomorphism - and its minimalist aesthetic inspired early modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse, and it continues to appeal to our 21st century sensibility. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 1" W x 2.25" H (2.5 cm x 5.7 cm); 2.875" H (7.3 cm) on included custom stand.
