Description

Papua New Guinea, Yangoru village, Boiken peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful talipun (literally "bride price payment") comprised of a woven circular medallion attached to the terminus of a giant green snail shell. The openwork reed element has a central body consisting of a branch-like interior substructure, surrounded by a thick exterior border covered in wispy bird feathers, and painted in hues of coral and cream. The talipun are highly-valued objects used during wedding ceremonies, and are traditionally given to the father of the bride by the groom as a dowry. Talipun can also be presented to the leaders of one tribe from another as compensation for tribal warfare or other violent conflict. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 9.5" W x 15.5" H (24.1 cm x 39.4 cm); 17" H (43.2 cm) on included custom stand.
