Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A playful, brightly painted woven panel in the form of a mythological beast. Made by weaving cane over a wooden frame, with a tail-like projection from one long end. Four arms, each with four fingers, complete the outlines of this fantastical creature, which is painted bright yellow and pale red using earth-based pigments. Made to be a decorative panel celebrating a triumph. Size: 20.25" W x 22.55" H (51.4 cm x 57.3 cm)
