Description
Iron tsuba of elongated rounded square form (ichijo-shiki-mokko-gata), with slightly raised rim. Surface is decorated with hammer marks, and inlaid with a tortoise in silver and sacred jewels in gold in high relief of the face, and with symbols of military power - a fan (gunbai) and a baton (saihai) - in a soft metal inlay on the back. Kame, the long-tail fresh-water turtle, is a symbol of longevity. "The animal is believed to live to an exceptional age, at which time, it is said, it develops a flowing white tail and exhales special vapors that conjure up sacred jewels." Unsigned.
