Description
The Couenophone, or Goofus Sax, is a free reed instrument with keys, which are arranged along the body in two rows like a piano keyboard. The instrument was marketed as a novelty by the French firm Couesnon & Cie., who also added an angled mouthpiece and fake bell to make it look more like a Saxophone. It enjoyed some popularity in the 20s with Jazz saxophonists, most notably Don Redman and Adrian Rollini.
Condition
Comes with a vintage National Broadcast Company promotional portrait photograph of US orchestra leader Ted Weems playing a Couenophone. Condition: Some dents and discoloring commensurate with age, missing the mouthpiece. Property from a Southern California estate.
