Henry Clay Work was a 19th-century American composer known for his songs of Americana. His most popular and famous song, ‘Marching through Georgia,’ appeared in 1865, shortly after General Sherman’s successful march to the sea (Stedman). This song had unprecedented sales with over one million copies of the sheet music sold!

This 1889 first edition book is a collection of Henry Work’s songs, illustrated with 12 full-page engravings depicting scenes of early frontier Americans as well as Civil War portraits.
