Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $125**

Northern Greece, Thrace, ca. 357 to 340 BCE. Cherronesos silver with a cow standing on a dolphin and on the obverse a "mill-sail" pattern (5.3 g). The other is a Thracian Byzantion silver drachm with lion (2.0 g). Size of larger (Cherronesos): 0.75" W (1.9 cm)

Cherronesos is Greek for "peninsula", and many cities used the name - for example, Thracian Chersonesos was in Gallipoli, but there was also a Greek city, now lost, on a place just called Cherronesos that was ruled by Athens. As a result, coins like these are often difficult to source. Byzantion was a Greek settlement in Thrace that was very rich but never had the kind of political power that many other Greek city states did.

Provenance: Ex- private collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
