First edition. DSB: "The first to conclusively prove the volcanic origin of basalt, Faujas de Saint Fond, here describes and classifies a great variety of basalts and identifies sources of each, often locations where he personally gathered samples. He also notes the artistic and architectural uses of basalts, refers to contemporary scholarship and records observations gleaned from travels and voyages. He closes with a catalog of the volcanic specimens gathered at Mount Etna by Dolomieu, who presented them to the author and the duc de la Rochfoucauld". On pages 435-468 it contains "Catalogue des produits volcaniques du Mont Ethna". DSB IV, pp. 548-549; Ward and Carozzi, 781.
