Description
8th-11th century AD. A group of twelve lead-alloy discoid seals comprising: one with bust of the Virgin to one side, patriarchal cross on three steps on the reverse; two with low-relief saints to one side, monograms to the reverse; two with low-relief angels to one side, monogram to reverse; two with monograms to both sides; three with Greek inscriptions to both sides; one with bust to one side and dog-shaped animal to the reverse; and one with bust to one side and monogram to the obverse. 88 grams total, 15-23mm (1/2 - 1"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. [12]
