Description
Clementine Hunter (1887-1988), "Zinnias With a Red Ribbon," c. 1944, oil on construction paper, signed "Clemence" lower left, and initialed "CH" lower right, verso with a written title "I saved the Ribbon from Christmas," framed, H.- 11 1/2 in., W.- 8 1/2 in. Note: From 1944-1947, Clementine's works were signed "Clemence" by James Pipes Register, who, along with Francois Mignon, promoted her and her work. They were pencil signed later "CH" by Register, when she adopted that signature, to show that they were from his personal collection. See "Clementine Hunter, Her Life and Art," by Art Shiver and Tom Whitehead, pgs. 129 and 131, and "Clementine Hunter, American Folk Artist," by James L. Wilson, p. 32.
