Description
Carved wood with a wonderfully complex series of horns and ears representing the antelope, accented with various pigments and some writing which may have been the dancers name and number. Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. For the dama festival, or a funeral for an important Dogon elder, hundreds of masked dancers perform, creating a brilliantly colored, ever-changing spectacle of sculpture, costume, song, and dance. The antelope is among the most popular, and this is quite a wonderfully stylized example.The mask measures 26 x 9 inches and has a 14 lb shipping weight.
