Description
A lovely vintage wooden mask from the Baule peoples, Cote D'ivoire, West Africa. Carved wood with a superb and refined carving style, raised facial features and a very well carved coiffure, most impressive! The mask itself measures 10.5 x 5.5 inches. *A metal display stand was not included with this lot, one can be provided after the auction for an additional $34.00Among the Baule such masks appeared in the final sequence of an operatic public entertainment known as Mblo. Mblo performances consist of a succession of dances that escalate in complexity and importance, culminating ultimately in tributes to the community's most distinguished member. Individuals honored in this way are depicted by a mask that is conceived of as their artistic double or namesake, hence the name "Portrait Mask" Shipping weight of 5 lbs
