Description
1675 John Ogilby Britannia Atlas England HUGE FOLIOS Roads Scotland Wales 2v
In 1675, John Ogilby, a famed Scottish cartographer, began working on his famous road atlas known as ‘The Britannia.’ Before this publication, only minor, local maps were available; however, Ogilby set the standard for what road maps would become. Each map was accompanied by full-pages of text that gave additional information on each road, description of towns and cities, and advice on how to properly use the maps. There was also speculation that part of Ogilby’s agenda was to provide ease for Catholics to take control of the United Kingdom.
This two volume collection features the earliest printing of the work along with a 1698 printing, neither of which contain maps. Even though the maps are lacking, these tomes offer an incredible insight into the earliest descriptions of the English road system.
