Description
1880 GUNS McLean Peace Makers WAR Propaganda Illustrated Satire Weapons
A rare first edition printing of McLean’s ‘Ukase or Peace Makers.’ This book is an elaborate and detailed anti-war tract composed in response to the 19th-century wars of the United States. James Henry McLean incorporates illustrations throughout that exhibit a comic exaggeration of the war effort. He proposed the idea of inventing weapons that are so powerful that no enemy would resist them, thus keeping the peace.
According to the author himself, this book,“will make war so terrible and devastating as to shock every community and cause them to rise en masse and declare that the slaughter of their fellows must cease!”Rilings says this work is:“A fantasy of arms. Literally a book in the style of a patent medicine brochure, but applied to the consideration of arms rather than ailments"
