Description
Glazed ceramic with paint and gold. Japan, Meiji period
The first exceedingly finely decorated, spherical vessel on three legs, the curved feet separated by cut-out, arched sections. On the body are eight slanted, rectangular fields filled with depictions of various landscapes in the style of Hiroshige’s Tokaido series, some featuring people. The handle is in the shape of halved kiku blossoms. On the powerfully vaulted golden lid are three cutout heart shapes as well as a knob in the shape of a seated shishi. On the bottom is the name KINKOZAN 錦 光 山.
The second a spherical lidded vessel on three stubby legs, meticulously decorated. Running around it is a scene on a river bank with about ninety figures, both female and male. Two arched handles; vaulted lid with two openings, the knob and area surrounding it a very golden chrysanthemum. The detailed and varying nishikide decoration has been executed with great care.
