Description
Glazed ceramic with paint and gold. Japan, Meiji period
Small, shouldered vase; the neck and mouth atop the flat shoulder very small. Depicted inside two large fields are bodhisattvas or goddesses, surrounded by numerous rakkan, arhat in Sanskrit, the Buddha’s successors. The detailed decoration consists of intricate “brocade style” (nishikide) with considerable gold. On the bottom the Shimazu family crest and the signature HO-DO-DA 保 土 田.
