Description
Kakemono painting with colors on silk. Japan, late Edo period

A precisely painted, realistic work that offers a considerable amount of blood but also has a humorous side, thanks to a skillful mannerism. The battle is over, the samurai’s helmet on his back, his long tachi back in its sheath; both the warrior and his horse have been hit by several arrows, yet he is holding up his lance, with the severed head of an enemy on top, in victory. Three more heads are tied to the horse. They appear quite lively, one of them is screaming while the head on the lance has a fierce expression. The samurai’s unflinching yet satisfied expression is a sight to see. The horse’s mane, tail and head with large blue eyes are excellently painted, its posture is dashingly directed forward. A discreet mounting lets the painting come into full effect. Ivory jikusaki.

Condition: Generally in good condition, damaged paper with stretcher marks and stains on the silk - crease folds are visible, one jikusaki missing
Provenance: From an important Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930
