Description
This is the complete 5-volume second edition (the first octavo edition) of the "Memoirs of Samuel Pepys, Esq. F. R. S. Secretary to the Admiralty in the Reigns of Charles II and James II. Comprising His Diary from 1659 to 1669" (376, 451, 446, 466 & 485 pages), published by Henry Colburn, London, in 1828. Although the diary covered the ten years noted above, it wasn't published until 1825. The shorthand Pepys used in much of the diary was deciphered by John Smith. Also included are a selection of private correspondence, edited by Richard Lord Braybrooke. The covers (app. 5,5" x 8.625"), full leather with gilt lettering and design, four raised bands to the spines, are scuffed. The attached title labels are missing from Volumes II and IV, and chipped to Volume I. All the Volume labels are attached. There is wear to the sides of the spines, but all boards are attached, although Volume II has notable splits to at the top and bottom of the spine sides, with resulting looseness to those covers. The only attachment is an oval stamp, crediting the bindery, to the top of Volume I's front inside cover (Bound by T. Armstrong 23 Villiers Strand). There are a few pencil notes to the otherwise blank end pages, but no indelible marks and no marks of any kind to most pages. There is recurrent foxing, mostly to the borders of and pages adjacent to the various engravings and other illustrations. Most text pages have no or few such flaws. There are no significant stains. The illustrations themselves, both the engravings and the multi-panel fold outs, are unfaded and with few stains. There is one shallow tear to one fold-out (see photo). There are no other tears. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the set conditions.
