Description
This is the C. Sutton (Nottingham) 1805 printing of John Milton's epic poem, "Paradise Lost, A Poem in Twelve Books" (366 pages). This diminutive (app. 3.75" x 6") edition is in very good overall condition. The cover, brown leather spine with gold lettering and design, marbled boards with leather corners, has faded areas to the boards, shallow bumps to the outside corners, and a few spot stains. The spine is straight and securely connected. The lettering is unfaded. The hinges are secure, with no looseness to the front or back cover. The only writings and attachments are to the front inside cover, which has the bookplate (claude os aperi oculus/close the mouth, open the eyes) of William Allen Potter, along with pencil notations at the top, most likely indicating the book number within Potter's library. Below the bookplate is the embossed name stamp of J. O. Edwards. There are no stamps or other attachments to the back inside cover spread or to any pages. I've found no other writing. This is an apparently recovered copy, but with no bindery attribution. The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages. There is occasional foxing, but almost all pages have no notable foxing or other stains. The most prominent flaws are the the first and last end pages, which are heavily sunned. There are few tears, all of which are shallow, and very few creases, none of which are prominent. The accompanying photos are of this copy.
