An interesting and important work on economic, political and cultural life in America during the Revolution by Italian Filippo Mazzei (1739-1816), physician, wine merchant and horticulturist who moved to Virginia in 1773 to promote the cultivation of grapes and other fruits. He lived close to Charlottesville, where he and his next-door neighbor, Thomas Jefferson, became kindred spirits and lasting friends. His Recherches constitute his memoirs and observations of his tenure in America. ;Sabin 47206; Howes M-456. ;
