Blue underglazed gu Chinese porcelain beaker vase having a baluster shaped body, with cylindrical midsection, a large trumpet-shaped neck extending into an expansive opening, raised on a prominent splayed foot base. The astounding artistry fills the entire surface area with flourishing foliage, soaring phoenix scholars stone, and mountainous hillsides. The scholars stone represented a small-scale version of the cosmos on which the scholar could contemplate within the borders of his studio or garden. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous craftsman. The foot rim left unglazed reveals grayish creme-brown ground and dark spots of firing marks. Displayed on a carved hardwood stand.
