Description

CAST-BRASS DOUBLE-ARM ARGAND LAMP, shaft with multi-part construction of acanthus leaves, supporting a curved ribbed arm with scroll ornamentation, waisted urn-form top with panels, weighted base. Each arm fitted with chimney cage and outer housing burner tube. Non-period colorless with frosted finish cut and engraved shades with heavy floral pattern, colorless glass slip chimneys. Possibly Messinger and Sons. Second quarter 19th century. 19" HOA, 17" WOA, 6" D foot. Shades 8" H, 2 7/8" D fitter.
Expected wear to finish, one arm with detached scroll, shaft with (UPDATED 5/18/17) three small holes, probably as made. Burner lacking interior components, shades and chimneys undamaged, with normal mold roughness to rims.
Literature: Parallels Gowitt - 19th Century Elegant Lighting, p. 140 and 141.
Provenance: From a Michigan collection.

Condition

Expected wear to finish, one arm with detached scroll, shaft with (UPDATED 5/18/17) three small holes, probably as made. Burner lacking interior components, shades and chimneys undamaged, with normal mold roughness to rims.
