Native American, Pacific Northwest, southeastern Alaska, Tlingit people, ca. early 20th century CE. A skirt made from hundreds of strands of twisted, woven rope, with dozens of puffin beaks and seashells tied onto the ends of the ropes. Puffin beaks are a common material used by the Tlingit; during the fall mating season, the birds shed some of the horn-like plates on their bills, which were then used to ornament clothing and make rattles. Women wore skirts like this one in warmer months, often with an apron over it. Size: 45.5" W x 30" H (115.6 cm x 76.2 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.
