c.1890 Patriotic Silk Embroidery w/ Eagle & Flags 23 ½” x 21 19 ¼” x 17 ½” and the frame½” and weighs over 6 pounds A Patriotic Embroidery on Silk showing an Eagle and a grouping of American Flags, and a shield. At the bottom are 2 ship’s life preservers. This embroidery was probably done in the Far East, c. 1890-1900 and sold to an American Tourist or a member of the American Navy when the “Great White Fleet” visited Japan and China at the end of the 19th century. It is large and framed in a heavy, wooden frame. Sight size is size is 23 ½” x 21 19 ¼” x 17 ½” and the frame½” and weighs over 6 pounds (shipping weight of a very oversized package should be in the 9 – 10 pound range. The embroidery is in average condition. The colors in the flags, shield and eagle have held strong, but the gray silk background shows damp-staining, both at the top and at the bottom (heaviest at the upper right). The silk itself is a bit wrinkled, but does not seem to show cracks or splits, but I have not had the piece out of the frame. Some small pieces of the backing paper have migrated under the glass, most noticeably on the eagle’s left wing.
