An identical example to the present lot was acquired by King George IV and appears in the 1812 & 1826 Royal inventories at Carlton House before being moved to Windsor Castle in 1828. Thomire borrowed the classical imagery from Jacques-Louis David's 1799 painting depicting the events following the abduction of the Sabine women by the founding generation of Rome.
