Description
It was most likely Sir Edward Landseer’s beloved 1839 painting of “Dignitiy and Impudence” that helped increase the popularity of depictions of dogs and their kennels throughout the 19th century.
This large and disarmingly charming painting was done by Karl Ruperti, a Belgian artist who operated in the last three decades of that century. The dog’s attention is totally captivated by the large stag beetle beside him that is climbing up his wood home which is romantically hung with leafy branches.
The artist was a keen observer of animal behavior as the look on the hound’s face reminds all of us dog fanciers of our own pets when they come across something unusual, especially a big bug such as the one shown. The intensity of the dog’s gaze was remarkably captured.
The artist chose to make his subject nearly life-size, which adds realism to the piece. The colors are wonderfully chosen to accentuate the dog. The golds, browns and greens harmonize with each other, creating a beautiful and winning painting; this is not unexpected as Karl Ruperti was primarily known in Belgium as a flower painter in the naturalistic style.
It is exceptionally finely painted, allowing for details in the dog as well as the beetle. It is clearly signed on the bottom-left.
I have had this piece professionally restored and chose an antique 19th century frame that has been re-gilded in which to present it.
It measures 27-1/2 inches wide by 37-1/2 inches high, including the wide frame.
