Nathaniel Chipman was a United States Senator from Vermont, first Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, first judge of the United States District Court for the District of Vermont, and an Colonial Officer during the American Revolution. Chipman was a correspondent of Hamiltons’, John Adams, Washington, among others. In this treatise, 40 years into the American experiment, Chipman revisits his groundbreaking 1793 ‘Sketches on Government. Contents include: Patriotism, Necessity of civil laws and government, natural, political, and civil rights and liberty, right of property, right of inheritance and testamentary disposition, right of opinion, formation of government, the civil compact, sovereignty, political power, division and limitation of the civil powers, the check arising from a balance of powers, election and appointment to office, subordinate political institutions, institute of Justice, natural law, law of nations, municipal laws and their civil obligations, moral obligation of civil laws, penal laws, taxation, etc. Approx.5.5x8.5 inches, hardcover; viii + 330 pages of text.
