SS 21 x 17.5 in.; DOA 28 x 23.25 in.
The son of a pastor, Nieweg studied theology and followed in his father's career. He resigned from the church in 1914 and devoted himself full time to painting. Nieweg studied with Hendricus Bremmer and developed a pointillist style. He was a great admirer of Vincent Van Gogh, as evident in the present painting which bears a striking compositional similarity to an 1888 canvas by Van Gogh.
