The original Heuer Monaco was made famous by the American actor, Steve Mqueen as he proudly wore the unusual square cased watch throughout the cult classic Hollywood movie, Le mans in 1971.
Contributing to the cult following was the Porsche 917K he drove, one of the most important & famous racing car in Porsche history, outfitted with a Gulf livery that had won the original 24hrs Le Mans race.
The dial color scheme was inspired by Steve McQueen’s Gulf racing suit in the movie as it used the same colors and stripes.
This watch is probably one of the most desirable modern Monaco special editions as the white dial example we have up for auction is the first of the limited editions Monaco’s. We subsequently saw a black dial then grey that were fitted with a sapphire crystal instead of the acrylic one found on this watch.
This early version special edition watch was limited to only 4000 units, which sold out fast and remains very sought after by collectors. Specific to the first edition is the acrylic crystal instead of sapphire and not having the Gulf word but «Automatic Monaco" just above the date. All later versions have the Gulf word & Monaco moved above the Tag Heuer logo.
This watch is powered by the Tag Heuer caliber 17 self-winding chronograph movement.
The case is comprised of a combination of both brushed and polished stainless steel. Mounted to the original Tag Heuer black leather strap which is secured to the wrist with a signed stainless steel single-folding deployment clasp.
When it comes to the condition of this piece, it is immaculate with no signs of cosmetic damage.
