James Abbott McNeill Whistler is one of the most famous artists in history. His original 'Whistler's Mother' is a historic piece of art - one that has been parodied many times (the sign of a true Master Work)! His famous signature for his paintings was in the shape of a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. The symbol was apt, for it combined both aspects of his personality‰€”his art was characterized by a subtle delicacy, while his public persona was combative. This is an ORIGINAL watercolor of a Chinese ceramic plate, signed with the afore-mentioned butterfly bottom right. Attributed to Whistler circa 1870, this work measures 7 1/2" x 12 5/8" and is in excellent, original condition.
