(George Moritz) Lowitz (1722-1774), Johann Matthias Hase (1684-1742), Homann Erben (firm - heirs of Homann). An original, hand-colored, copperplate engraving of a double hemisphere map of the world with four additional hemispheric maps as well as two celestial models and a pair of tastefully decorative illustrated cartouches in the upper left and upper right corners that present the titles, one in Latin and the other French. The map also includes incomplete Australia and New Zealand, fanciful Northwest Coast of America based upon the early Russian explorations, and mythical images of the Poles. The custom, hand-made gilded framing has been executed to full museum standards using the highest quality frames and mats. This map was compiled by J.M. (Johann Matthias) Haas (also Hase or Haase), Professor of Mathematics at Wittenberg who made maps for the publishing firm Homannische Erben (Homannis Heirs or Homann Heirs). Homann Heirs was an immensely successful German publishing firm that made quite a name for itself throughout the 18th century. Johann Baptist Homann founded the firm in 1702, and his son Christoph took over the business following Johann's death in 1724. When Christoph died at the age of 27 in 1730, subsequent Homann heirs inherited the firm. The company name then became known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs and continued their business until 1848.

Map is in very good condition with a strong impression, some minor toning and a few minor stains commensurate with age. Creases are discernible as this was a folded map. Only minute scuffs to the framing. This framing has been executed to full museum standards using the highest quality frames and mats. It also incorporates a very high level of craftsmanship with exceptional design choices.
