Chinese, Late Ming Dynasty or Early Qing Dynasty, 17th century
A five-tiered cinnabar lacquer box of square form with flat top deeply carved with scholar and attendants in a waterside pavillion overlooking a lake with cranes and mandarin ducks and an overhanging pine tree, with diaper patterning representing water and horizontal hatching representing sky, each side of the box with chrysanthemum and peony carvings on a buff ground, the integral flared base carved with a key fret border along the bottom edge.

Condition
Overall with cracking and loss to lacquer throughout, mainly to corners. Tan linen substrate visible in some areas where lacquer is missing. Each tier with minor loss to interior lip, not visible when box is fully constructed. One tier with seam separation to one corner. No loose elements. Under black light examination, no evidence of glue repairs.
