Description
Although a very prolific painter of dogs, which he often painted in pairs, there is little really known about J. Langlois except that he was working from the 1860s to the end of the 19th century. Most art reference books report that he was probably from France. In my experience, I have heard him referred to as the “Isle of Wight painter,” which may explain the beach backgrounds in many of his paintings. That he was influenced by the work of his contemporaries George and Edward Armfield is very clear. Mary Ann Wingfield, author of “A Dictionary of Sporting Artists: 1650-1990,” writes that Langlois almost exclusively painted terriers, and over the years I have had numerous works by him; terriers chasing rabbits on the beach, terriers keenly at watch near rabbit holes, and terriers staring serenely out to sea. He usually signed but did not date his paintings. My trusty 2003 edition of “Davenport’s Art Reference and Price Guide” reports that a work attributed to Langlois sold at auction for nearly $10,000. This painting is the matched pair to another I am offering for sale (see PJR-817). What is unusual for this pair is their large size, as most of Langlois’ work that I’ve seen is far smaller. Also, the subject of this work is obviously not a terrier, but a spaniel. One of this painting’s prominent characteristics is that it is just so pretty. The sky is beautifully painted in mauve, blue, gray and cream that blend well with each other. There is a romantic mist over the soft green hills in the distance. The foreground is cover in a lush landscape of browns, greens and rust. This foreground consists of his traditional flora that mimics the dunes where it is said he lived and painted. The sky, background, hills, landscape and the dog all come together to create that Langlois prettiness. Langlois’ traditional broad brush strokes on the spaniel’s fur help to place the dog at home in its setting. The wide-eyed dog is alert and proudly displaying his catch. The pheasant’s feathers have wonderful, Langlois-ish, coloration. The detailed landscape in the foreground is pretty in itself. This lovely painting is clearly signed in the lower right-hand corner. I have had this piece professionally cleaned, restored and framed. It is housed in a wide wood gesso and gilded frame in a soft gold color that complements the painting well. It measures 37 inches wide by 27 inches high, including the frame.
